General Introduction

Wuhan Polytechnic University (WHPU) is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university authorized to confer M.S. degrees, with the priority over engineering and the characteristics of food science and engineering, supplemented by the combination of engineering, management, economics, arts, science, agriculture and medicine.

WHPU has a long history of over 50 years. It has two campuses. The main campus is located at Changqing Garden of Hankou in Wuhan, the other is located at gold and silver lake of Hankou in Wuhan. WHPU has an area of 747,000 square meters, with total floor space of 427,000 square meters. The total endowment for teaching and scientific research facilities is more than 76.638 million Yuan. The university currently has a teaching and administrative staff of 1,217 teachers, of which 706 are full-time professional teachers.

At present, the number of full-time students reaches about 10,968. Meanwhile the total number of adult education students is over 3,000. The university now consists of 15 colleges and departments, apart from the adult education college. The university has 37 four-year college specialties, 2 three-year college specialties, and 8 provincial key disciplines. Besides, there is one provincial key laboratory. The library owns a collection of 787,000 volumes, and has more than 1,000 kinds of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages in the university, therefore, ranking among the best literature collections in the province. In the past 50 years, the university has turned out 30,000 personnel with various professional skills, and has won widespread acclaim from society for the excellent quality of our graduates.

Staff Construction

WHPU insists on its educational conception that human talents development is the foundation and human talents strengthen the university. At present, the university possesses 706 full-time professional teachers, of which 277 are full professors and associate professors. 16 experts enjoy government special bonus at national, provincial or ministerial level respectively; more than 93 doctorate teachers; more than 60 professional teachers are continuing advanced studies leading to doctorial degree; more than half of the teaching staff members have master degrees. The whole quality of the teaching staff has been apparently strengthened. Great changes have taken place in all aspects of the university.

Disciplines (Specialties) Construction

WHPU sticks to taking discipline's development as leading position, gradually improving its level by means of defining disciplines orientation, uniting disciplines team, establishing disciplines base, making great efforts to create disciplines with superiority and characteristic, and so on. In recent years, holding its principle of rationalization and scientification, the university adjusts and optimizes the disciplines structure on the basis of improving and promoting traditional disciplines, and consolidating the basic disciplines. As a result, the structure of disciplines becomes more rational, the academic team much stronger, and the superiority of disciplines can be fully carried out. At present, the university has initially established disciplines structure with distinct characteristics, prominent mainstay and combination and penetration between disciplines. Especially the building of 4 provincial key disciplines has achieved remarkable results. Not only do they play a leading role, but also base on these disciplines the right to confer master degrees is authorized in Cereal, Oil and Vegetable Protein Engineering, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Mechanical Design & Theory and Applied Chemistry.

Teaching Reform and Talents Cultivation

The university consistently deepens education and teaching reform. In 2003, the teaching programmes and outlines were revised again. Having adopted a series of new measures on various aspects such as teaching management, teaching at different levels, supervision and estimate of teaching quality, the management of examination, credit hour system and the management of students' registration, the university achieves good effects. In recent years, the teachers of the university have compiled more than 179 text books; six courses such as Advanced Mathematics are chosen as the provincial excellent quality courses; several teaching achievements have won second and third place at provincial level; the excellent classes take up more than 30%; the passing rate of CET 4 maintains more than 75%; non-computer majors maintain more than 85% passing rate of computer test 2 level at one time. About 300 students won the prizes in all kinds of College Student Competition Activities at provincial level or above, such as National College Student Building Modulus in Mathematic Competition, Electronic Design Competition, and English Competition. Besides, we have won the Excellent Organization Prize of college student extracurricular academic and scientific and technological achievements in the fourth “Challenge Cup” competition held in Hubei province. Society speaks highly of our graduates because their quality is excellent. To everyone's comfort, our one-time placement rate for graduates has maintained 87% or higher for 10 years successively.

Scientific Research and Academic Exchanges

The university makes full use of its advantages in developing agricultural products processing and transformation. It attaches great importance to the high and new technology and new crafts overspreading application for increasing its value, such as Biology, Enzyme Engineering, Micro-capsulation, Membrane Separation and Supercritical Fluid Extraction Technology etc. Depending on the condition of provincial key laboratory for agricultural products processing and transformation, the university vigorously develops scientific and technological research and service. In recent years, the university has undertaken a wide range of scientific research projects totaling 522, of which 108 have passed tests of province-level or above, 7 have won invention patents, 19 have won nature science prizes and scientific and technological progress prizes, 67 have won other kinds of prizes, and achievements of 200 projects have been transferred for application. Among these projects, most have achieved advanced level at home and abroad, some have filled up the domestic empty record. In addition, more than 3,029 academic papers have been published. Of these more than 190 were collected in SCI, EI and TSPT, three world famous index books, and more than 179 monographs were published. The university has actively developed academic exchanges and scientific and technological cooperation, attending or co-sponsoring influential international or national academic conferences for many times. Furthermore, the university has established close cooperative relationship with more than 10 foreign countries and scientific research institutes.

Campus Culture Development

The university attaches great importance to campus culture and its function of educating students. A great deal of humanities lectures and scientific and technological lectures as well as rich and colorful cultural activities on campus are carried on in the university, so that a good educational environment is formed. The university has been chosen as ‘advanced unit of campus cultural activities' for 16 years successively. Besides, the university has been chosen as “the excellent university of PE estimate in Hubei province”, “the excellent university for reaching the standard of PE in Hubei province”, and “the advanced unit of the public PE in Hubei province” etc. The rate of students' reaching the standard of PE maintains 95% or above. The university also has won many prizes in all kinds of competitions. For examples, on behalf of Hubei province, the shuttlecock team of WHPU won the first place in the International shuttlecock invitation competition held in Zhongshan, Guangdong province;WHPU won the gold medal of Woman 400 meters Race in the 11 th Sports Meeting in Hubei Province, the 8 th College Student Sports Meeting in Hubei Province; During the 18th College Student Scientific, Technological Cultural and Artic Festival in “Spring of Wuhan City” and the Celebration of the 80 th anniversary of the establishment of the Communist Youth League, three programs of WHPU won one first prize and two second prizes in the activities.
