School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering

Introduction

School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering currently offers 5 undergraduate programs: Chemical Engineering and Technology, Applied Chemistry, Material Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, and Environmental Science. The first level Chemical engineering and technology (covering 5 secondary disciplines: chemical engineering, chemical process, application chemical, biological chemical industry, industrial catalytic) is a master's degree authorization center; Chemical engineering and Technics is one project master authorization center. It was approved in 2005 by Hubei Education Office as a brand specialty. In 2010, this major in WHPU became the training objective of the 4-year undergraduate programme, i.e. Environmental Engineering, which is to be constructed to be a national featured major. This major is aimed to train advanced environmental engineering professionals on prevention and control of pollution from water, gas, noise, and solid waste; water supply & drainage engineering; water pollution control plan; and water resource protection.

Requirements for training:Students must learn basic theories and acquire basic knowledge on environment pollution control engineering. They must learn to monitor and control waste water, waster gas, solid waste and other pollutions, learn environment quality assessment, environment planning and management, environment protection project design and do scientific research. Students get bachelor's degree in engineering upon graduation.

The main courses:advanced mathematics, college English, computer basis, Chemical Engineering Principles, analytical chemistry, environmental microbiology, environment monitor, water pollution control project, air pollution control project, solid waste disposal, and design & principle of environment protection equipment.

Employment direction: The graduates can do jobs of planning, design, construction, administration, education and research in departments of government planning, economy administration, and environment protection as well as in design institutes, companies, and research institutes colleges.

Environmental Science (four -year undergraduate program)

Training objective: The four- year undergraduate program for Environment Science majors is aimed to train advanced professionals on scientific research, teaching, environment protection, and environment administration. With emphasis on natural science, humanities and social science, the college trains students¡¯ all-round development so that they can have a systematic command of the fundamentals on environment science and can meet the demands of socialist construction.

Requirements for training: Students of this major mainly learn fundamentals on environment science and they are trained in fundamental research, applied research and environment administration. They are required to acquire good science accomplishment and abilities of teaching, research, development and management, to master methods of environmental monitoring and environmental influence assessment, and to have a command of basic skills in environment planning & administration.

Chemical Engineering and Technology (four -year undergraduate program)

Key discipline: The key discipline is Environmental Science.

The main courses: inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, ecology, environmentology, environmental chemistry, environbiology, environmental monitoring, environmental engineering, environmental influence assessment, environment administration, environment law, environmental information system, etc. The graduates can do jobs of research, teaching, environmental influence assessment, environment planning & administration, etc. in research institute, colleges, companies, and government departments. They can also work as environmental counsellors in companies.

Training objective: Students are trained to be advanced engineering professionals with knowledge on chemical engineering and technology who can do jobs of engineering design, technology development, technical management and scientific research in areas of chemical industry, oil refining, metallurgy, power resource, light industry, medicine, environmental protection, and military industry.

Requirements for training: Students of this major mainly learn chemical engineering, chemical technology, and applied chemistry. They are trained in chemical & chemical engineering experiment skills, engineering practice, computer application, scientific research and engineering design. They are required to be basically able to optimize and innovate the modern production processes, to develop and design new production process, and to read materials in foreign languages. Upon graduation, students can get a bachelor's degree in engineering.

Employment direction: Graduates of this major can work at chemical industry, light industry, medicine, oil refining, metallurgy, power resource, environmental protection, and military industry.

Applied Chemistry (four -year undergraduate program)

Training objective: Students are trained to be professionals with basic chemical theories, knowledge and skills and with professional training who can do applied research, technology development, and technology administration. Graduates can do jobs of scientific research, teaching, and administration in industries of chemical industry, medicine, environment, and material. They can also further their study as postgraduates to study applied chemistry and chemistry-related interdiscipline.

Requirements for training: Students of this major mainly learn basic chemical theories. They are required to be basically able to do applied research and technology development, to read foreign professional literature, and to have knowledge of laws on intellectual property and so on. Upon graduation, students can get a bachelor's degree in science.

Employment direction: Graduates can do jobs of scientific research, teaching, and administration in industries of chemical industry, medicine, environment, material, food, biology and light industry.

Material Chemistry (four -year undergraduate program)

Training objective: Students are trained to be advanced chemistry professionals with basic theories, technologies, knowledge and skills on material chemistry who can do research, teaching, technology development, and relevant administration.

Graduates can do jobs of scientific research, teaching, and administration in industries of chemical industry, medicine, environment, and material. They can also study further for a master's degree in applied chemistry and chemistry-related interdiscipline.

Requirements for training: Students of this major mainly learn basic theories, knowledge, and skills on material chemistry. They must be trained in scientific thinking and experimenting. They are required to be basically able to do material research and technology development by using fundamental theories & knowledge and experimental skills. Upon graduation, students can get a bachelor's degree in science.
